Terntank won innovation prize

gulddroppen_2017_web-1220x915

On Energy Harbor Day (Energihamnsdagen) 2017 in Gothenburg, Terntank was voted winner of the newly established innovation award “Gulddroppen”. Terntank is the winner of the Innovation Award “Gulddroppen”, which was first issued by Göteborgs Hamn on Energy Harbor Day, April 27th. The Energy Harbor Day is organized by the Port of Gothenburg, focusing on the activities of the Energy Harbor.

Five candidates

The Port of Gothenburg drew attention to five projects this year’s Energy Harbor Day. The companies nominated for the new innovation award were Preem for its renewable diesel, Terntank for its LNG-powered tankers, St1 for its ethanol plant, Nynäs for its renewable asphalt and Furetank for its LNG operation. The winner Terntank was voted by the participants on Energy Harbor Day and took home the Gold Drop with 31 percent of the votes.

“Innovative predecessors”

The motivation for the nomination of Terntank reads:

Ternsund is the first ship ever bunkering with LNG in the port of Gothenburg. Together with its newly built sisters, Ternsund will trade european harbor without releasing sulfur and particles. “Ternsund is an innovative precursor at the forefront of a greener shipping. Through courage, dedication and innovation, Terntank is a model in the development towards the future of shipping. ”

Tryggve Möller at Terntank says that the shipping company will of course continue to work hard to reduce the ecological footprint to a minimum.

“We are extremely grateful to win the Gold Drop with such a starting field,” says Tryggve Möller at Terntank

Ternvag Most Sustainable Vessel in Rotterdam in 2014

Ternvag Most Sustainable Vessel in Rotterdam in 2014
The Ternvag, a oil/product tanker owned by the Danish company Terntank, was the most sustainable vessel to dock in Rotterdam in 2014, according to the Environmental Ship Index (ESI). Last year 1413 ships with a high entry in the Environmental Ship Index arrived in Rotterdam. In total, the Port Authority paid out €1.2 million on these sustainable vessels.

Ternvag is a tanker built in 2003. At the request of de charterer – the Swedish oil company Preem – the vessel has been fitted with so-called SCR (selective catalytic reduction) for the engines. That is a post-combustion technology used to reduce emissions of nitrogen oxides (NOx). Terntank has currently commissioned the development of 4 LNG-driven product tankers. ‘In 2016 one of these ships will also be sailing for Preem. So we want to win the prize for the most sustainable vessel in Rotterdam again in 2017,’ says Tryggve Möller, director of Terntank. ‘We see the prize as an endorsement of our policy to use clean ships. Rotterdam is a sustainable port and the largest in Europe.’

Port Authority embraces ESI
Granting a bonus to vessels with a high entry in the ESI is in line with Port Authority’s policy to become the most sustainable port of its kind. This is also why the Port Authority is working on the transition from fuel oil to LNG as a fuel for shipping. The Port Authority supports the Terntank initiative to start using vessels which run on LNG. Such vessels have been receiving double the ESI bonus since 2015, because they have very low NOx emissions.

Top 5 ESI in Rotterdam in 2014

  1. Ternvag oil/product tanker
  2. Bit Oktania chemical tanker
  3. Olympus oil/product tanker
  4. Tharsis general cargo vessel
  5. OOCL Berlin container vessel

Environmental Ship Index
The ESI is a certificate that has been issued since 1 January 2011 by the World Port Climate Initiative, at the request of ship owners. The index is an indication of the environmental performance of vessels based on their emissions of air pollutants (NOx and SOx) and CO2. Ports and other nautical service providers throughout the world can use the index to reward ships and, in this way, encourage sustainable behaviour in the shipping industry. Thirty-six ports and other nautical service providers already give ‘ESI vessels’ with a certain score a bonus. These include ports such as Rotterdam, Antwerp, Los Angeles, New York, Sohar, Vancouver, and – since two weeks ago – Tokyo.

The World Ports Climate Initiative is a collective of 55 prominent ports which work actively to reduce air pollution and carbon emissions in particular. It does so under the auspices of the International Association of Ports and Harbors, the international lobby group for seaports.

Terntank wins award

Terntank wins Marine Propulsion magazine’s Shipowner Efficiency Award 2015

The Shipowner Efficiency Award was one of seven categories in this year’s Marine Propulsion awards scheme. The scheme celebrated innovations made during 2014 and the Shipowner Efficiency Award was judged against this standard: “The winning entry will demonstrate an improvement in efficiency that has brought benefits to both the company and its customers, in terms of reduced time, costs, waste or energy consumption.”

The awards scheme was widely publicised, including in Marine Propulsion magazine itself, through social media such as the many LinkedIn groups run by Marine Propulsion magazine, by email messages and phone contacts. Companies could nominate themselves or others for an award and the opportunity for making nominations via an online application form was open for about three months until the end of February. In Terntank’s case, the nomination was made by a reader of our Tanker Shipping and Trade magazine, which had featured its planned LNG-powered newbuildings in a recent article.

A panel of internal and external judges (Prof John Carlton, Professor of Marine Engineering at City University, London, and Derek Hodgson, Permanent Secretary of the International Association of Classification Societies, supported by the editor of Marine Propulsion, Paul Fanning, the Group Managing Editor of Riviera Maritime Media, Edwin Lampert, and the Executive Editor of Riviera Maritime Media, Paul Gunton) reviewed the entries and identified shortlists for each category. Those shortlists were posted online for final selection of the winners by readers of Marine Propulsion.

On an award ceremony on the 15th of April in London, Terntank was the winner of the three nominated ship owners. The panel of judges, made the following motivation for the award:

Terntank is pioneering the use of LNG fuel in the tanker industry and has four LNG-powered product tankers on order. The ships will have a large propeller and an advanced hull design, reducing fuel consumption. The engines will only need to run at 65 per cent mcr to reach service speed.”

Tryggve Möller was present in the award ceremony and collected the award.

The judges and readers recognised Terntank’s innovations in both ship design and powering to improve efficiency and reduce energy consumption for these newbuildings.

Installation av bränsleoptimering och frekvensomvandlare

ternholm_DSC5014_phs_web-1220x915[1]

Under drift

Yes from the commission to co-fund JIP Baltic SO2lution

21 Nov 2014

During the Motorways of the Sea Conference in Gothenburg it was revealed that the Commission has reserved a co-funding of 3.6 million Euro to the Joint Industry Project Baltic SO2lution, a cooperation between Terntank, Wärtsilä, North European Oil Trade (NEOT) and Wega Enviro. This to support their action to introduce a new two-stroke dual-fuel engine to the market and to minimise air emissions in the supply chain of petroleum products in the Baltic Sea.

The new vessel will be calling 21 ports and terminals in the Baltic Sea and the chosen solution provides notable financial as well as environmental advantages both in the distribution chain and on-board the vessel.

In numbers JIP Baltic SO2lution is planned to reduce emissions of SOx by 99%, NOx by 85% (the engine is IMO Tier III emissions compliant in gas mode without need of NOx abatement equipment) and particulate matter by 99%. Together with other advanced energy efficient measures on board, there will be an emission reduction of 40% for CO2.

Since JIP Baltic SO2lution is part of the collaboration platform Zero Vision Tool, this new vessel is also included in a planned safety and environmental measurement overview, which will be conducted via a Joint University Project, where phase one will include emissions and discharge (phase two is planned to include safety, modal shift and noise). The aim is to estimate what the environmental investments, made by all the Joint Industry Projects working via the ZVT platform, are worth both for the health, wealth and sea.

Port of Gothenburg to give environmental discount for LNG-powered ships

(Source and Article in Swedish: Sjöfartstidningen)

The Port of Gothenburg is taking the lead in encouraging shipowners to invest in LNG to reduce environmental impact.

The Port of Gothenburg will reduce its port tariff substantially for ships using liquid natural gas (LNG) as fuel. LNG-powered ships will receive a total tariff discount of 30 percent when they call at the port. The discount will come into effect at the beginning of 2015 and will continue for four years. The aim is to induce more shipping companies to switch to cleaner fuel.

“We have long believed that LNG is the fuel of the future. This initiative is entirely in line with our ambition to reduce the environmental impact of shipping and create a sustainable Scandinavian freight hub”, says Magnus Kårestedt, Chief Executive at the Port of Gothenburg.

The Port of Gothenburg believes that there are considerable environmental benefits to be gained from using LNG in shipping and industry. It states that sulphur and particle emissions will be reduced to almost zero, nitrogen emissions by 85-90 percent and carbon dioxide emissions by 25 percent.

New tariff

The discount is included in the new port tariff that the Port of Gothenburg will introduce on 1 January 2015 in conjunction with conditions for shipping in the Baltic and North Sea changing with the introduction of new, stricter regulations governing sulphur emissions. The principle is that ships with a high environmental performance will be recompensed.

Two indexes will be applied as a basis for discounting – Environmental Ship Index and Clean Shipping Index. The port notes that ESI is used by many ports around the world, both in Europe and the rest of the world. The Clean Shipping Index is based on the demands made by the freight-owners on the shipping industry.

The port has informed its customers that in the new port tariff to be introduced in 2015, ships that are classed according to ESI and have 30 points or more will receive a 10 percent discount (based on GT). Ships that qualify for the green class according to CSI will receive a 10 percent discount (based on GT). In addition to the index-based discount of 10 percent, LNG-powered ships will receive a further 20 percent discount on the port tariff until December 2018.

“With this clear economic incentive in the port tariff, we want to help speed up developments in our region”, the port writes in a circular to its customers.

Quick results

A shipping company that can look forward to the reduced port tariff is Terntank, which has four LNG-powered ships on order at a Chinese shipyard. Two of the ships will be signed to long-term charters with the Finnish oil company NEOT and one of the ports they will be calling on to load cargo will be Gothenburg. Terntank’s newbuildings will receive the maximum discount on the port tariff in Gothenburg.

“We want to thank the Port of Gothenburg for showing their willingness to take action when it comes to environmental investments. If there will also be discounts on fairway dues, as has been indicated, it will be a historic step and will reduce emissions dramatically in a relatively short space of time. Let’s hope that more ports follow Gothenburg’s example”. says Tryggve Möller at Terntank.

Welcome decision

The port’s decision has been welcomed by the whole shipping industry. Carl Carlsson, who is responsible for environmental issues at the Swedish Shipowners’ Association, emphasises that it is not technology that is the limiting factor. It is now a question of creating the necessary conditions for investing in the new and environmentally friendly solutions that already exist or are in the pipeline.

“From the perspective of the shipping companies, it’s no longer a question of technology. Now it’s a question of finding financial instruments. We must now focus on the financing and financial side and help each other if we all want this type of shipping to be reality in the Baltic“, he says to the Scandinavian Shipping Gazette.

The Swedish Shipowners’ Association is hoping that more ports will adopt the same or a similar system.

“The Port of Gothenburg is demonstrating leadership and a close understanding of the situation facing the shipping companies. Working within the framework of the Zero Vision Tool project and our excellent collaboration with HELCOM, we will also ask other ports in the Baltic to help. Terntank’s LNG-powered newbuildings will be deployed in traffic to and from Finland and, naturally, we will ask these ports first”, says Carl Carlsson.

The Swedish Maritime Administration has announced that it will give an “early mover” discount on fairway dues although it has not announced the size of this discount.

“We presume and hope that the Swedish Maritime Administration’s discount will be technology neutral”, says Carl Carlsson.

Terntank order two more

Terntank proclaims its options on two sister ships to the two LNG powered product tankers ordered in the autumn of 2013. The oil company NEOT also confirmed that they are taking in two of these on time charter. (Source and Article in Swedish: Sjöfartstidningen)

Terntank Rederi AS now has four LNG powered 15,000 dwt product tankers on order at the Chinese shipyard Avic Dingheng Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. The ships will be delivered at three-month intervals so that the first one will be delivered in the spring of 2016 and the fourth in the beginning of 2017.

Terntank elected to declare its two options because there is considered to be a demand for energy efficient and environmentally adapted tanker tonnage.

ENVIROMENTAL ADVANTAGES

By using LNG as fuel it is possible to achieve significant environmental advantages in comparison with low-sulphur marine gas oil, which many shipping companies will be switching to when the more stringent sulphur regulations come into force in 2015. LNG reduces emissions of SOx by 90 per cent, NOx emissions by almost 80 per cent, and particulate matter by over 90 per cent. The newly built ships will also emit 35 to 40 per cent lower volumes of CO2 than a conventional tanker today, reports Terntank.

The ships will be fitted a low-speed main engine from Wärtsilä with dual fuel and low-pressure technology. The new engine complies with the emission requirements for IMO Tier III without other exhaust emission systems for NOx during the use of LNG. Bunkering will take place ship-to-ship with bunker ships.

COOPERATION

Two of the new ships will be long-term chartered by NEOT, North European Oil Trade Oy, in Finland. NEOT, which is jointly owned by the cooperative union SOK and the oil company St1 Nordic Oy, currently have three of Terntank’s ships in service: Ternvik, Ternhav and Ternholm. They will continue in service until the new ships have been delivered. The energy consulting company Wega Advisors Oy in Finland has negotiated the agreement between Terntank and NEOT.

“We think Terntank is a high quality company who will be the first ship owner who has the innovative LNG technology in use and they are a local company who knows our trading area very well including ice navigation. We believe LNG technology will help us to ensure continuous operations in the Baltic Sea region by meeting the Sulphur Emission Control Area (SECA) requirements that will become binding from the 1st January 2015. Cooperation with Terntank is also a natural continuation for the cooperation we already have with them including the three time chartered vessel at the moment,” says Satu Mattila, Chartering Manager at NEOT.

RENEWED DISTRIBUTION CHAIN

In the beginning of 2013, NEOT underwent a logistics renewal process. The entire distribution chain was renewed and this also concerned the overall logistics concept, including maritime transportation.

“We also took the new regulations that will apply from 2015 into consideration. At the same time Terntank presented very interesting plans for new LNG vessel technology and WEGA Advisors had a clear vision of LNG solutions in our trading area. Together with Terntank and WEGA Advisors, we began planning a long-term overall logistics solution. In the autumn of 2013 we decided to take in three high-class and efficient ships on time charter from Terntank to cover the logistics requirements until the new LNG powered vessels arrive in 2016,” Satu Mattila tells us.

NEOT has set a series of special requirements that Terntank’s ships will comply with.

“We have technical requirements for the vessels, such as very good ice capability and operational efficiency, but these requirements also concern the fact that NEOT is working to reduce the environmental impact of oil products within the distribution chain by utilising new and energy-efficient technology to reduce current emission levels in the Baltic Sea’s emission control area. In addition to other emissions we are also aiming to comply with IMO’s Tier III limit for NOx,” explains Satu Mattila.

TRADING ON THE BALTIC SEA

NEOT conducts wholesale trading with oil and bioproducts, where maritime transportation constitutes an important part of the distribution chain. Around 2.5 million tonnes of oil products were transported in 2013 under the direction of NEOT’s shipping department. NEOT handled a total of four million cubic metres of oil products during the year.

The most important trading area is the Baltic Sea area and the most important ports are located on the west of coast of Sweden and in Denmark and Norway. The products are normally shipped to NEOT’s own terminals in Finland, which are located in Hamina, Pori, Vaasa and Oulu, and to terminals on the east coast of Sweden.

“We believe that LNG powered vessels will be a good solution for the Baltic Sea area in the future. One key issue will be access to LNG as a 100 per cent bunker fuel in order to utilise all the environmental aspects for these vessels. We believe that within our trading area, which is mainly the Baltic Sea area, it could be possible to consider chartering in even more LNG powered vessels in the future,” says Satu Mattila.

Awarded again

The Swedish Mercantile Marine Foundation (Stiftelsen Sveriges Sjömanshus) has decided to again award two of Terntank’s engine officers for their creative invention. It is our Chief engineer Jimmy Pålsson and 3rd engineer Edward Lundin, both sailing onboard M/T Ternvag who also this year received a prize with following explantory statement as stated above and below. Congratulation to both of You!

“Sweeping without rust”

An exhaust gas boiler is a type of heat exchanger that takes advantage of the heat from the exhaust gases in the funnel and transfers it to the ship’s heating system. Sometimes require exhaust gas boiler cleaned, and there are various methods that are more or less appropriate. The device injects a certain amount of water and air in the exhaust gas boiler under high pressure. the high pressure helps to atomize the water and thus evaporates relatively quickly. By also using compressed air for a few seconds after the tank emptied allow any water residue that may remain in the loops disappear.

LNG bunkers supply

Norwegian Skangass will deliver LNG to Terntanks two LNG-driven new buildings. This is the content of the LoI that was signed on the 6th of February.

Its good that we signed this LoI and that we have a supplier of LNG. Our customers require us to have a solution for LNG-bunkers to our vessels, that’s why this LoI is important for us, says Tryggve Möller at Terntank.

The bunker operation will conducted by ship-to-ship with LNG-bunker vessel Coral Anthelia, who starts to operate for Skangass this autumn, says Roger Göthberg, sales- and marketing manager at Skangass.

Terntank Rederi A/S orders the worlds most environmentally friendly tankers

Terntank orders two new LNG-driven 15,000 DWT tankers with delivery in February and May 2016. The order also includes an option for two more vessels. Terntank is the first shipowner to order vessels within the project platform Zero Vision Tool (ZVT).

With a newly developed dual fuel main engine from Wartsila and an advanced hull design from Rolls Royce Terntanks new vessels will be able to meet all future regulations already in 2016. The vessels emission of particles will be reduced by more than 90%, NOx by 80% and CO2 by 35% and the vessels will be built in accordance with IMO Tier III regulations..

– We will be using a large propeller together with a large main engine that only needs 65% of the maximum effect to reach a service speed of 14.5 knots. With LNG having a10 to 15 percent better energy value compared to marine gasoil and with an optimized underwater hull design the vessels will have a fuel consumption of between 13.5 and 14.0 ton per day compared to todays 22 ton for existing vessels of similar size, says Jens P Buchhave, Managing Director of Terntank Rederi A/S.

In order to cope with the higher building cost for these vessels Terntank is, together with other participants in the ZVT, working towards Ports and Governmental institutions for a 90% reduction in port costs and fairway dues.

“Testing tools for fire hoses”

“Each year the fire hoses on board tested. To see if water comes out of them is of course quite simple, but there is usually no machine will tell you if the pressure is right. The promoters wanted a tool that could help to show just the pressure in the hoses. They took a piece of pipe, drew fire hose connectors at both ends. In the middle of the pipe was installed a ball valve through which the water is turned on and off. At one end of the tubular element mounted a manometer. The tool is positioned, with a closed ball valve of the hydrant and the hose to be tested is mounted in the other end of the tool and hose nozzle is in the closed position. Hydrant valve opens. When the ball valve is opened water pressure in the tubing increases and the current pressure can be read. The test also shows that the hose nozzle is tight and several hoses can be tested simultaneously. A simple, practical and authoritative tool.”

SCR Catamizer installed on Ternvag

Terntank Rederi AB and Preem AB equips chemical and product tanker Ternvag with a catalytic converter on the main engine and a SCR Catamizer on each auxiliary engine. To make a really substantial environmental investment is very stimulating, says Tryggve Möller, CEO of Terntank Ship Management at Donsö.

Terntank expect the installation to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 370 tons per year, nitrogen oxides (NOx) emissions by 230 tonnes and also the consumption of gasoil with 120 tons per year. Catamizern is a combined catalytic converter and exhaust gas boiler that both recovers the heat in the flue gases and purify them.

Olle was a family man who put his immediate family in the first place, but there were still plenty of room in his big heart for very many people. It is said that no man is irreplaceable, but Olle leaves a void space with us, his friends in the shipping companies of Donsö, that can’t be filled.

Music was an indispensable part in Olle’s life, but so were also shipping. Olle was a dedicated, competent and highly responsible as a shipowner. When circumstances called for major changes to secure the future of the company, Olle, who loved his island of Donsö, took the tough decision to move to Skagen, Denmark, together with his family, to establish a new residence for the company. This alone was a major loss for the shipping community of Donsö. Olles dedication to shipping went far beyond his company. We are grateful for Olle’s efforts to promote the Swedish shipping industry in so many ways, and he was always an exemplary representative of all Donsö shipping companies. Olle was an emphatic man who always spread joy and warmth about him. We mourn a very good friend and colleague. The sense of loss after Olle is great, but his memory will for ever be here as a source of warmth and light, a power source that will generate the energy we need to continue in his spirit.

We call on peace be upon him, and send our warmest thoughts to Olle’s family.

”You are on your way. One day, the night becomes white. One day and stars grow out of his arms. Don’t be afraid, there is a darkish harbour. You don’t see it now, but travels there.” (extract and free translation of hymn 432 in the Swedish Book of Hymns).
